Standard Chartered has introduced spot cryptocurrency trading for institutional clients in the United Arab Emirates, extending its digital asset services in one of the Gulf region’s key financial markets.
The bank said on September 3, 2026, that eligible institutional customers in the UAE can now trade bitcoin and ether on a spot basis through its electronic trading channels. The move makes Standard Chartered the first global systemically important bank, or G-SIB, to provide such a service in the UAE.
The new offering enables institutional investors to buy and sell bitcoin and ether for immediate delivery, rather than using derivative products. Ether is the native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum blockchain.
Standard Chartered said the service has been incorporated into its existing trading infrastructure. Clients will be able to execute cryptocurrency transactions through the bank’s foreign exchange trading interfaces, allowing them to access digital assets through platforms they already use for financial markets activity.
The launch represents another step in the bank’s expansion of digital asset services in the UAE. Standard Chartered already provides cryptocurrency custody services in the country, having launched its digital asset custody business there in September 2024. The addition of trading and execution capabilities broadens the range of cryptocurrency services available to its institutional customers.
Under the new arrangement, clients can choose where their cryptocurrency trades are settled. Standard Chartered said investors can use a custodian of their choice, including the bank’s own digital asset custody service.
The UAE has become an important market for financial institutions developing regulated digital asset businesses, and Standard Chartered’s latest move strengthens its presence in the country’s growing cryptocurrency ecosystem. By combining trading access with custody services, the bank is expanding its ability to support institutional clients seeking exposure to digital assets.
The UAE launch follows Standard Chartered’s earlier expansion into institutional cryptocurrency trading in the United Kingdom. In July 2025, the bank introduced institutional bitcoin and ether spot trading through its UK branch.
At that time, Standard Chartered became the first G-SIB to offer deliverable spot trading in bitcoin and ether to institutional customers. The service allowed eligible clients to transact in the two major cryptocurrencies through the bank’s established trading infrastructure.
The UAE rollout therefore builds on an existing model rather than representing Standard Chartered’s first move into institutional spot cryptocurrency trading. The bank is now extending that capability to another major financial centre while maintaining its broader digital asset strategy.
The expansion also highlights the bank’s continued development of cryptocurrency-related services beyond custody. Its UAE digital asset business, launched with custody in 2024, now includes execution capabilities for institutional investors, giving clients a more integrated way to manage cryptocurrency transactions.
Standard Chartered’s focus on bitcoin and ether reflects the two assets’ position among the most established cryptocurrencies. The bank’s offering is specifically aimed at institutional customers that meet its eligibility requirements, rather than being a retail cryptocurrency trading service.
For investors using the service, the spot structure means transactions involve the underlying digital assets rather than contracts based on their future value. The availability of settlement through either Standard Chartered or another chosen custodian also gives institutional clients flexibility in how their assets are held and managed.
The move comes as global banks continue developing their digital asset businesses and expanding services for institutional investors. Standard Chartered’s strategy in the UAE combines its existing banking infrastructure with cryptocurrency trading and custody capabilities.
The bank said eligible institutional customers can access deliverable bitcoin and ether spot trading through its electronic trading channels. The service is integrated with its existing platforms, including foreign exchange interfaces, while settlement can be handled through a custodian selected by the client.
With the launch, Standard Chartered further extends the institutional digital asset capabilities it first established in the UK in 2025. Its UAE expansion adds trading execution to the custody services introduced in 2024, marking another stage in the bank’s development of cryptocurrency services for institutional clients.
